A lot of people went to the movies over the weekend and many of them must be horror fans because the #1 movie was Evil Dead. The 2013 remake of the 1981, cult-classic took in $26 million in it’s opening weekend, which is really good for a horror movie.
Following closely on Evil Dead’s $26 million take are two movies that are currently tied for second. As of now, both G.I. Joe: Retaliation and The Croods have their weekend estimates at $21.1 million. Those figures could stay the same or one could pull slightly ahead as the final tallies are counted. Either way, these are two strong performances for both movies.

Jurassic Park 3D, the weekend’s other new release, also had a strong opening with $18.2 million and the #4 spot on the list. According to Box Office Mojo, JP 3D’s IMAX showings accounted for roughly 32 percent of the movie’s opening, which is the highest IMAX share ever for a nationwide release. I guess that means we can expect many more IMAX 3D remakes in the future.
