Weekend Box Office: Lots of Buckles Were Swashed

Unsurprisingly, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, took the number one spot at the box office with $90.1 million at 4,155 locations. That’s the highest weekend gross of the year but not the highest opening weekend booty for the Pirates films. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End plundered $114.7 million on its first weekend in May 2007 and Dead Man’s Chest pillaged a 2006 record breaking $135.6 million in it’s opening weekend in July 2006.

Our family film critic, Cynthia Fuchs, reviewed Stranger Tides.

Movie goers who weren’t wading through the pirate tides Macarenad there way over to Bridesmaids, which took in another $21.1 million and held onto the number two spot. Thor continues to thunder in third place on it’s third weekend in release. The Norse adventure scarred up another $15.5 million and has now earned $145.4 million in 17 days. Fast Five held onto the number 4 position with $10.6 million worth of tickets sold. Fast Five has now made $186.2 million in 24 days. Rio managed to edge out Priest by $50,000. The two movies earned $4,650,000 and $4,600,000 (respectively).
