You don’t need to go to the arcade to play Whac-a-Mole. Mattel’s version brings the classic arcade game to your home. The object is to bop the most moles before time runs out, and to do that, you get two mallets (one red and one green) and a light-up game unit with five moles. Turn on the game and choose how many players. You can play the game solo or compete against a friend. Within each player mode, there are two levels of difficulty, so you’ll choose that next.

Now you’re ready to play! If you’re playing solo, use one of the mallets to bop any mole that is lit. Doesn’t matter what color it lights up. If the middle mole lights up, bop it fast because it’s worth two points! If you accidentally bop a mole that is not lit, you lose points from your total. And at the end of the game, the unit will tell you how many moles you got.

A two-player game is very similar, except each player takes one of the colored mallets and only bops a mole that lights up in that color. If the middle mole lights up in your color, hurry and bop it to score two points. At the end of the game, the unit announces which color won.

Should I get it?

Because this is a game for younger kids, it doesn’t have the same gameplay that parents might remember playing back at the arcade. Instead of the moles going up and down, they’re lighting up and not lighting up. It’s definitely challenging for little kids as they try to keep an eye on their moles and act fast to bop them. But this could still be fun for adults to play along. After all, bopping a mole could release some pent-up Covid-19 frustration!
