Play and learn with the Sensory Sand Shaved Ice Maker from KiwiCo. You might know KiwiCo as the educational subscription kit company, and while they do offer subscriptions, they also have stand-alone kits. The Sensory Sand Shaved Ice Maker is one such kit that uses sensory sand to make play treats, while helping kids ages 3 to 7 engage in early math. The kit includes a play shaved ice maker, red and white sensory sand, three sand molds, two bowls, a counting board, a mess tray, and a grownup guide.

Kids can press the sensory sand into the molds and tap to empty the molds on the mess tray. With the molds, they’re making strawberries, raspberries, and ice cubes out of the sand. On the counting board, kids slide the sliders to the number of each item they need. Then, take the lid off the machine, set a bowl underneath, and drop five pretend ice cubes inside, put the lid on, and spin the handle clockwise to shave the sand/ice into a slush. Top off the bowl with some pretend fruit.

And if making pretend food is not enough, the parent guide includes a recipe for making an oatmeal breakfast with a fruity bear face.

Should I get it?

This toy will inspire a lot of imaginative play, but there are lots of developmental benefits, too. Counting helps kids with early math concepts, naming and counting numbers helps boost language development, turning the crank and filling the molds helps fine motor skills, and the pretend play builds social development. There are additional suggested activities for parents to guide their kids through and any non-silicone kitchen tool can be used as a sand mold for more play.

Pros

Imaginative play
Makes learning math fun

Cons

Hard to get lid on and off
