Remember how the scientists in Jurassic World hatched dinosaurs? Well, now that’s kind of what kids get to do with the Jurassic World Primal Hatch. Inside this egg is an electronic toy T. Rex to hatch and then bring to life with more than 100 sounds and reactions. Will your dinosaur grow into a friend or be a fierce enemy? It’s all up to how kids play with and train their dino.

To start, you’ve got to remove the egg from the box, which is quite the process, but it’s important that you follow the steps for best results. Then you can hatch the T. Rex by tapping on the egg. Then, the egg will begin to crack, hatching a baby dinosaur through a gooey membrane. (You’ll also need to attach the tail, which can be found inside the egg.)

The T. Rex has a tail sensor, a head sensor, a hearing sensor, a vision sensor, and a tongue button. You can approach the dinosaur slowly with your hand in front of its face or approach quickly, pat its head, and grab its tail. The dinosaur also comes with a clicker that you use to get the dinosaur’s attention and a steak accessory that you can press into the dinosaur’s tongue.

The interaction you have with the dinosaur helps the baby dinosaur become an adult. You’ll hear dramatic music to signify this transformation. In adult mode, you’ll be able to keep track of your dinosaur’s moods by the color of its eyes. You can continue to interact with the dinosaur in all the same ways, but you might hear some different responses.

You can also use the clicker to enter game mode, touching the dinosaur’s head to scroll through the five games. In Jurassic Dance Party, you make the dinosaur groove to the beat. In Protection Mode, you can place an object behind the T. Rex, and it will respond if you get too close. In Sniff Test, let the dinosaur smell various items or people and watch for a reaction. You have to react quickly to the dinosaur in Quick React – grab its tail as it lifts, tap its head when it shakes, or touch its tongue when it opens its mouth. And in Red Light/Green Light, you can only approach the dinosaur when its eyes are green. (The instructions say there is a QR code to scan for more detailed game information, but that information was not available at the time of this review.)

Three AA batteries are included, and the dinosaur does have two levels of volume.

Should I get it?

This is a really fun play experience for dinosaur fans. While the hatching experience is a one-time thing, it’s still really cool to watch it happen, and there’s so much play with the dinosaur once it’s out of the egg.

Pros

100+ sounds and reactions
Hatching the dino to playing in adult mode
5 games
Lots of interaction
Imaginative play

Cons

Tricky getting egg out of box
