Monopoly Go! Review

Some people like to play Monopoly in an app, while others prefer playing on a board. Well, now you can have the best of both worlds with the Monopoly Go! board game. Based on the popular Monopoly Go! app, the object of the game is to be the first to build a landmark. You can play the game with two to four players ages 8 and up. 

In this version, each player gets their own mini board. Players can choose from one of four Monopoly tokens: a car, Mr. Monopoly, a rubber duck, and a dog. Landmark blocks are sorted by color in the game tray, and the dice get rolled in the center of the tray. 

This version is also different from previous Monopoly games because all players roll and move at the same time. If you land on a color space on your board, take a matching-colored landmark block from the tray and add it to your board. You want to stack four matching-colored blocks on one build square to win. If you land on a Bank Heist space, you can challenge another player to see if you can match an image on the Bank Heist dial and successfully complete a heist. If that happens, you get to steal a block from your opponent’s board. Nothing happens if you don’t choose the same image. If you land on a Shut Down space, you can activate a Shut Down on any one player by removing a block from their board and returning it to the game tray, unless that player has a shield tile to stop you. 

Other board spaces include Monopoly classics, such as Go, Just Visiting, Go to Jail, Free Parking, and Chance. All of these have similar rules to the classic gameplay, except for Go and Chance. If you land on Go, you can choose one of three actions (take a block, pull off a bank heist, or activate a shut down), but if you pass Go, you don’t get to choose an action and just follow the rules on the space where you land. Instead of Chance cards, there are four types of Chance tiles. A Money Bag lets you take any color landmark block from the tray. Use the GO Button tile to choose and perform any one of the three actions like you would if you landed on GO. Mr. Monopoly allows you to move your Mr. Monopoly marker one space to the right on your Mega Shut Down Tracker. And a Shield allows you to cancel one Shut Down played against you.

Every player gets a Mega Shut Down Tracker and a Mr. Monopoly marker, and you move the marker one space to the right on the tracker whenever you have a Mr. Monopoly tile or whenever you can’t take a landmark block from the tray. If your marker gets to the end of your tracker, you can activate a Mega Shut Down by choosing any color and making all other players return any blocks in that color to the tray.
