What will you do with Makedo? The Makedo Discover kit gives kids ages 5 and up the tools they need to turn ordinary cardboard into whatever they can imagine. The packaging turns into a cardboard toolbox that holds plastic Scrus in two sizes, a Scru-Driver, two Safe-Saws, two Mini-tools, and one Fold-Roller.

The Scrus help you connect up to three or six layers or corrugated cardboard. The Scru-Driver tightens or loosens the Scrus. The Safe-Saw has a steel blade with no sharp edges to saw through cardboard. The Fold-Roller creates perforated lines so you can easily fold cardboard. And the Mini-Tool functions as a mini screwdriver if there are more than two kids creating.  The ends of all these tools have a hole puncher tool. Additional Scrus can be purchased separately.

The set doesn’t come with any instructions, but there are illustrations of things kids could build on the back of the package. You can also visit the Makedo website for more specific ideas of things to make, both at home and in the classroom.

Should I get it?

Generally, I dislike cardboard crafts because it ends up being a parent-led effort, so the idea of making a cardboard construction kit with safe tools that kids can use on their own was appealing. However, the tools are still difficult for kids, and even adults, to use. My 8-year-old couldn’t figure out the Safe-Saw, nor did she have enough strength to punch holes into the cardboard. And if I’m going to do all the work, I would much rather use a box cutter than the Safe-Saw. I thought the Fold-Roller and Scru-Driver worked well enough, though sometimes it was hard to line up two pieces of cardboard to screw in a Scru, and not all of our Scrus stayed put without the cardboard breaking.
