The LEGO Movie easily constructed a #1 opening in it’s debut weekend with $69.1 million. That’s the 2nd highest opening ever for the month of February (#1 is The Passion of the Christ) and one the best-ever for an “original” (not a sequel or prequel) animated movie. The movie has been getting great reviews and everyone that we have spoken to who has seen it has loved it. Chances are good that this is going to stick around for a while and end up earning more than $200 million.
You can check out reviews of the LEGO toys for the movie on our The Lego Movie page, here.
Two other movies opened over the weekend. The Monuments Men had a great opening with $22.7 million and the #2 spot on the list. Unfortunately, the weekend was less rosy for the third new movie, Vampire Academy, which sucked in a paltry $4.1 million and didn’t even crack the Top 5.
