Box Office, Strong Debuts from Big Hero 6 and Interstellar

Two new movies, Big Hero 6 and Interstellar, opened over the weekend, and helped deliver the box office’s best weekend in three months.

Big Hero 6, the Disney/Marvel animated action-comedy opened at number 0ne with an estimated $56.2 million. That’s the second best opening for an animated movie in 2014. The best is still The LEGO Movie, which opened in February with $69.1 million.

Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi epic Interstellar, opened in second place with a strong $50 million.  That’s slightly less than Gravity‘s $55.8 million, but Gravity benefitted from 3D ticket sales and Interstellar is a 2D pic.
