Two new movies opened over the weekend and they easily claimed the top spots on the list. Monsters University took the #1 position with an estimated $82 million in ticket sales. For everyone keeping track, that’s Pixar’s 14th number one opening in a row. Monsters U also has the distinction of being Pixar’s second-highest opening ever behind Toy Story 3 ($110.3 million).
World War Z surprised everyone with its $66 million debut. The zombie-flick starring Brad Pitt, is now Pitt’s highest opening ever and the second-highest second place debut ever. The Day After Tomorrow ($68.7 million) is first.
Man Of Steel took a big hit and saw a nearly 65% drop in ticket sales from it’s debut the weekend before. The Franco brothers rounded out the Top 5 with James Franco’s This Is The End in 4th place and Dave Franco’s Now You See Me coming in 5th.
