Giant monsters battling giant robots couldn’t knock some tiny minions off the top of the list over the weekend. Despicable Me 2, held onto #1 despite two new movies opening. Those two, Grown Ups 2 and Pacific Rim opened in 2nd and 3rd (respectively).

Grown Ups 2, the sequel to Adam Sandler’s Grown Ups, took in $42.5 million, which is the second-highest debut ever for an Adam Sandler live-action movie. While Sony, the studio releasing Grown Ups 2, was probably pleasantly surprised by the movie’s opening, the folks at Warner Bros., were probably a little confused and disappointed over the opening of Pacific Rim. The over-the-top, action flick about giant monsters and robot mechs should have done a lot better, when you consider the pre-opening buzz. But for whatever reason, moviegoers opted for family friendly sequels rather than action.
