It was a busy weekend at the movies with four new releases opening up. The Matt Damon/Jodie Foster sci-fi flick, Elysium took the top spot with $30.4 million and was followed by the Jennifer Aniston/Jason Sudeikis comedy, We’re the Millers in 2nd with $26.6 million. The two new family friendly movies, Planes ($22.5 million) and Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters ($14.6 million) came in 3rd and 4th (respectively).
Although Planes was way off of Disney’s Cars openings (Planes is a spin-off of Cars), it was originally planned as a direct to video release so it’s $22.5 million opening is a definite success and the movie is almost halfway to recouping it’s $50 million budget. The latest Percy Jackson movie is turning out to be more of a disappointment than anything else. The first Percy Jackson movie opened to $31.2 million whereas Sea Of Monsters didn’t even make that in it’s first five days (the movie opened early last week). It’s doubtful that families will be flocking to the movies in the last few weeks of Summer so Percy is going to have a difficult time at the box office.
Here is The Top 10 for the weekend of August 9 – 11, 2013:
