What It Is

What It Is

The Hexbug Spider is the latest in Innovation First's lineup of crawling robotic bugs. Small enough to fit in your hand, the Spider is a six-legged robot that can move in any direction, guided by its 360-degree rotating head. Kids control the Spider using the 2 IR channel remote control. This dual band control means that two separate Spiders can be controlled at the same time. (So if two kids are playing together with their Spiders, one kid will control his on channel A and the other kid controls his on channel B. This keeps their remote signals from crossing so that they don't end up controlling one another person's Spider. Although, you could be sneaky if you want.) The Spider is available in teal, red, blue, orange, and green.

Why It’s Fun

There's something about these Hexbug Robotic Creatures that really appeals to kids. From the remote control feature to the bright colors, Hexbug Spiders are fun to watch. What makes Spiders really cool is their transparent bodies. Kids can see into the toy and look at all the mechanisms in action. It's a lot of fun to see how the toy works as it moves along both hard surfaces and carpet. Plus, the movement is really elegant. There are a lot of robotic bugs and creepy crawlies out there right now, but these are the most responsive and the most scientifically inspired.

Who It’s For

The Hexbug Spider is no gross creepy-crawly. Instead, this little robot is cute and colorful, making it great for both boys and girls ages 8 and up. Even adults will want in on the fun. (Family pets might freak out when they see the Spider in action.) This is going to appeal most to kids who have an interest in robotics because the construction and movements of the translucent critter are endlessly fascinating.

What to Be Aware of

The Spider requires the use of five AG13/LR44 batteries. These batteries are included, but they can be expensive to replace when the time comes. Also, a screwdriver is needed to replace the batteries in both the remote and the Spider.
