Friday started off with a close race for the #1 spot between the weekend’s two new releases – Madagascar 3 and Prometheus. As the weekend progressed, Madagascar 3 pulled ahead to take the spot with $60.35 million compared to Prometheus‘ $50 million.
Those are very impressive numbers for both movies and have earned the two some bragging rights. For Madagascar 3, it’s the fourth-highest opening of the year and right in line with the original movies’ opening ($61 million). While Prometheus came in second, it’s opening weekend tally set a new record for the Alien franchise and now ranks 12th on the all-time list for R-rated movies.
The previous weekend’s big winner, Snow White and the Huntsman, was off 59 percent from it’s opening with an estimated $23 million earned in it’s second weekend and the number 3 spot on the list. That’s a big hit for a big budget movie, which has now earned a total of $98.5 million.
Coming in 4th, was MIB 3, which has now earned $135.5 million in it’s 17 days of release. That’s well behind MIB 2.
The Avengers is still in the top 5 with another $10.8 million added to it’s insanely impressive total, which is now $571.9 million. It will be fun to keep an eye on the movie and see if it can reach the $600 million mark before getting pulled from theaters.
