Weekend Box Office: Thieves Steal #1

Last night might have been Hollywood’s biggest night of the year to pat themselves on the back with Oscars but that didn’t get us non-famous, potential-audience members into theaters. The Top 12 movies earned a combined $89.5 million over the weekend, which is close to what Avatar (the #1 grossing movie of all time) earned in it’s opening weekend alone.

Two new movies – Snitch and Dark Skies – opened over Oscar weekend but neither was able to take the top spot. That honor went to the most successful movie of the year, Identity Thief, which reclaimed #1 after giving it up last weekend to A Good Day to Die Hard. A Good Day slipped down to 5th in it’s second weekend and looks like it will end up being the least successful movie in the Die Hard series.

Identity Thief wasn’t the only movie that moved up the list. Escape From Planet Earth had a strong weekend and moved up to 3rd (from 4th). The family-friendly, animated adventure is on target to take in more than it’s $40 million budget.

Here is The Top 10 for the weekend of February 22 – 24, 2013:

1. Identity Thief ($14,064,000)
2. Snitch ($13,000,000)
3. Escape From Planet Earth ($11,013,000)
4. Safe Haven ($10,600,000)
5. A Good Day to Die Hard ($10,000,000)
6. Dark Skies ($8,850,000)
7. Silver Linings Playbook ($6,051,000)
8. Warm Bodies ($4,750,000)
9. Side Effects ($3,511,000)
10. Beautiful Creatures ($3,410,000)
