An “R”-rated comedy about a talking teddy bear broke box office records and easily claimed the #1 spot with $54.1 million. Ted, Seth MacFarlane’s first motion-picture, had the highest opening weekend for an “R”-rated non-sequel comedy ever. It made more money in it’s opening weekend than The Hangover ($44.9). Another “R”-rated rarity occured over the weekend with Magic Mike, Channing Tatum’s male-stripper flick, taking the #2 spot. You don’t see “R”-rated movies take #1 AND #2 at the box office on a summer weekend very often.
There were two other new releases this weekend that both made it into the Top 10. In 4th place, Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Witness Protection made an impressive $26.3 million and is Tyler Perry’s fourth best opening. I’ve never seen a Madea movie but Eugene Levy (the movie’s co-star) cracks me up so this could be my first…maybe. The other new movie, which I definitely won’t be seeing, is People Like Us, which just made the Top 10 at #10 with $4.3 million.
At the other end of the success spectrum from People Like Us, The Avengers crossed the $600 million mark and allthough it finally dropped off the Top 10 (it’s 11th now) the movie has made $606,298,000. Wow!
Here is the Top 10 for the weekend of June 29 – July 1, 2012:
