The numbers are in and they reveal that nobody went to the movies over the weekend. Well, almost nobody. A few people did head to the theaters but there were so few of them that The Top 1o movies only earned an estimated $46.8 million, COMBINED!. Just to give you an idea of how bad that is, The Avengers made over $80 million in it’s opening day alone. Even one of the year’s biggest flops, John Carter, earned close to $40 million in it’s opening weekend.
So what happened? The answer is simple, there is nothing worth spending our hard-earned dollars on right now. The best looking movies at theaters are the ones that have been out for weeks and the weekend’s only new offerings included The Words, which the commercials did a terrible job of explaining, and The Cold Light of Day, which I’ve never even heard of.
At least we have Finding Nemo 3D and Resident Evil: Retribution to look forward to this week.
Here is the Top 10 for the weekend of September 7 – 9, 2012:
1. The Possession ($9,500,000)
2. Lawless ($6,002,000)
