Weekend Box Office: Paranormal 4 & Cross Miss the Mark

Two new movies opened over the weekend and neither did very well. Paranormal Activity 4 took the number one spot with $30.2 million, which sounds good until you compare it to the previous Paranormal Activity movies. Last year on the same weekend in October, Paranormal Activity 3 made box office history with a record-setting $52.6 million opening. In 2010, Paranormal Activity 2 opened to $40.7 million and while the original movie opened to a much lower figure, it went onto develop amazing word of mouth reviews and would ultimately gross over $100 million.

The other new movie, Alex Cross, landed in 5th place with a very disappointing $11.75 million. I love the James Patterson books and the Alex Cross movies,  Kiss the Girls and Along Came a Spider but judging solely by the commercials, Cross doesn’t look like a movie that I need to see in theaters. It looks like they are trying to make Alex Cross an action series rather than a thriller (with action) that the books are known for.

Here is The Top 10 for the weekend of October 19 – 21, 2012:

1. Paranormal Activity 4 ($30,200,000)
2. Argo ($16,625,000)
