Weekend Box Office: Mama Scares Up The Big Bucks

Welcome to a new week and the Weekend Box Office recap. I hope everyone had an enjoyable MLK day. It was nice having the day off and the chance to watch the President’s Inauguration for a change. Lots of people headed to the movies over the weekend and many of them decided to see Mama. Mama did way better than anyone expected and took in $28.5 million over the three-day weekend.

Two movies that did well at the Golden Globes did well at the box office with Zero Dark Thirty and Silver Linings Playbook taking the second and third spots on the list. Unfortunately, the news isn’t so good for the weekend’s other  two new releases (Mama being the first). Mark Wahlberg’s Broken City took in $8.3 million and debuted on the list in 5th place, while former Governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, did even worse with The Last Stand falling into 9th. I happened to be in Hollywood last week and in the hotel that was hosting a premier party for The Last Stand.  I wasn’t at the party but it looked like nobody really cared about the party or movie and when passing tourists asked what was going on, they mostly responded with a “meh” and walked by when given the answer.

Here is The Top 10 for the weekend of January 18 – 20, 2013:

1. Mama ($28,495,000)
2. Zero Dark Thirty ($15,800,000)
