Make that explosion noise with your mouth then say “Avengers sank my Battleship”! That’s probably how Universal and Hasbro are beginning the week as Battleship performed like a dingy in it’s opening weekend earning just $25.3 million. That’s about $5 million less than the year’s previous biggest flop, John Carter ($30.2 million), which also starred Taylor Kitsch.
The seas are shinning for The Avengers, which added another $55.06 million, which is the second-best third weekend on record. Avatar currently holds that top spot with $68.5 million earned on it’s third weekend. In the past three weeks, The Avengers has earned a staggering $457.1 million in the U.S. alone. The movie is currently sixth on the highest grossing of all time list and will likely pass Star Wars in the next few days to become number five. If The Avengers continues to perform as it has, it could pass The Dark Knight (currently third on the all time list) by the end of May.
There were a few other new movies setting sale over the weekend. Sacha Baron Cohen’s latest uncomfortable comedy, The Dictator, did fairly well bringing in an estimated $17.4 million. What to Expect When You’re Expecting, on the other hand, performed poorly with just $10.5 million in ticket sales.
