I want to introduce myself. My name is Trevor, and I’m four years old. My baby sister, Jenna, is only two years old. That’s why I’m telling this story. You have to be a big guy like me to tell a story. I’m not sure how old my mom and dad are. They still look pretty young to me, and I love them very much.
My favorite thing to do in the whole world is to go to the amusement park. I love all the rides, the fun characters dressed in costumes, watching all the people, and especially my favorite treat…ice cream!
Mom and dad know that the amusement park is my favorite, so we often go. But when my baby sister came along, I noticed that we spent a lot less time at the park, and we didn’t go nearly as often. Babies are a lot of work, I can tell. My baby sister would get cranky, so I’d get cranky. I remember my mom saying that it was time for a nap, so we’d better go home. Another time, on a very sunny and hot day, my dad said that he didn’t want us in the sun too long. Even though we had plenty of sunscreen, it was too much sun for our sensitive skin. That’s a big word that parents use.
Another time I think my mom got tired of me getting hungry, and we didn’t have any snacks. It gets expensive buying treats every time kids get hungry, I guess. I think my dad mostly just got tired of carrying me around. I’d walk a little, and he’d carry me sometimes—time to go home. There was always something.
Then one day, everything changed. Somebody somewhere invented this thing called the “Caboose.” It was just another stroller to me, but it sure made mom and dad happy. It had a reclining seat for Jenna so she could take her nap while we stayed at the park. That took care of one big problem. It also had a sun canopy to keep us in the shade. Bingo! There was also a big basket for mom to store our toys, snacks, sweaters, jackets, and anything else we might need. There were drink holders and a food tray, so we didn’t have to stop so often. Dad liked that.
But here’s the thing that changed my life. This Caboose thing had an actual bench for me to sit down. When I got tired of sitting, I could stand on this platform on the back of the stroller. Sometimes I’d walk along with mom and dad until I got tired again. This stroller was the greatest invention ever!
Here’s the best part of the story. This stroller got me to the amusement park more often, we stayed longer, and the whole family seemed to have more fun.
Since I’m older and wiser now, I’ve noticed something. When the kids have more fun, mom and dad seem to have more fun. I think it works the other way around too.
