Let me get my bias out up front: I believe all good games are social and that playing games should be a social experience. I spend many hours each month sitting around a table with friends playing board games both simple and ridiculously complex, and have tried to instill a similar sense in my three

“Family Game Night” has become a buzzword in our culture, thanks to a successful advertising program. But how many families really do it? Not very many from our unscientific interviews, but the desire is there. Playing games with the family seems to be on many a to-do list, but not always possible to do. And
When I was 11 years-old, my parents could not keep me inside the house. Hot, cold, rain, or shine, as soon as homework was done, I would run outside and meet my neighborhood friends. I don’t remember exactly what we would do, but it did not matter. We wanted to play. We wanted fresh air, our bicycles,

In the front hall my school from Pre-Kindergarten though 12th Grade, there was a bronze plaque in the front hall that we saw every day. Great ideas come to us at the most random times, don’t they? About six years ago, a friend of mine and I decided to put together a fun little book club for our 10-year-old kids’ class of fourth graders. We picked out some great books that the kids would love, came up with cool games and activities that would excite and delight, and ran it all with parent volunteers at the school. Summer camp? Summer shmamp! We’ve had ten weeks of summer vacation, and my kids have spent just two of those at a summer camp. The rest of the time they have been at home with me. But they haven’t been bored at all. We’ve gone berry picking, visited museums, taken swimming lessons.

I was always a game player from the time I was a young child. The first game I remember playing was the card game Mille Bornes. While I played and owned a zillion games, I had some favorites. The original Skittle Bowl was awesome; as it had wooden pins that made a great crashing sound when you hit them (it’s just not the same with plastic pins!). NBA Basket was another one of my favorites. I still have my original game from the 60’s as I couldn’t part with it. But the game I was a little crazy about was Battling Tops.

I love to watch kids play, and I love to play with kids. I feel lucky enough to be able to do both everyday. As a psychologist and a father, I love what I do and feel blessed to see kids show me who they are, what they feel, and what they are learning through the manner in which they approach play.
As parents we hope to teach our kids the basics – colors, shapes, numbers – while still having fun and spending quality time together. Fortunately the toy industry has risen to the challenge by creating new and exciting learning games each year while continuing to update the classics. But after awhile, even the child who is Candyland’s biggest fan may want a break from playing the same game in the same way. Rather than run out and by a new product, save time and money by reinventing the way you use the games that are already in your home.
