There has been a ton of Star Wars news over the past few months surrounding Disney’s recent acquisition of Lucasfilm. Some of that news has been good–new movies!–and some has been bad–cancelled Clone Wars. One of the most disappointing bits of news was the closure of LucasArts, the video game division of Lucasfilm. This news was especially troubling to fans because it meant that the highly anticipated new game, Star Wars 1313 would not be coming out.
Yesterday saw some good news for the future of Star Wars games. It was announced that EA will become the exclusive publisher of Star Wars games for the “core gaming audience” (AKA, console gamers) and Disney will retain the rights to develop new titles within the mobile, social, tablet and online game categories.
EA is no stranger to the Star Wars universe. They are the company behind the MMO, Star Wars: The Old Republic. While neither Disney or EA has given any specifics about games, including the future of Star Wars 1313, it’s good to know that plans are in place and we can expect more Star Wars games in the future.
I’m hoping that there is some sort of games announcement made at this Summer’s E3 and if there is, I’ll pass it onto you. In the meantime, you can follow me on Twitter, , for more Star Wars talk.
