Editor's Review
Merge construction with the great outdoors when you build and play with Stanley Jr. Explorer kits. Build your own wooden binoculars with the Binocular Kit. Or build your own wooden birdhouse with the Birdhouse Kit. Each is sold separately. For both kits, you’re going to need a hammer, safety goggles, and a screwdriver.Â
The Binocular Kit is a 53-piece set. The instructions say it will take 45 minutes to assemble, and adult assistance will be necessary. It comes with stickers and paint for decorating the binoculars. There’s also a field notebook that kids can decorate with the stickers and included colored pencils.Â
The Birdhouse Kit is a 39-piece set. The instructions say it will take 60 minutes to assemble. It comes with paint to decorate the birdhouse. Once finished, hang it outside on a tree, add some birdseed, and observe what birds flock to your house.

Should I get it?
With both of these sets, kids will like building something themselves, decorating it however they want, and then getting to use it outdoors. Unfortunately, the building process wasn’t always easy. Some of the screws were hard to screw in, and the picture instructions were not always easy to follow. Patience and adult help are necessary. Unfortunately, we couldn’t see much through the binoculars. They definitely magnified things – when used without the smaller lenses – but they were blurry. When the smaller lenses were included, we couldn’t see anything through the binoculars. The birdhouse was more functional.
Pros
Introduce kids to real building
Let kids get creative
Help explore the world around them
Cons
Building process was difficult
Binoculars didn’t work well
