For those of you new to the potato party, Poptaters combine the enduring fun of Potato Head with pop culture goodness. The potatoes have holes to plug in the features of each unique set, from large set pieces like hair, hats and clothing, to small details like the eyes, ears, mouth, and nose, which can be swapped around freely. Each figure also includes a random bonus piece inside the textured potato body.

Super Impulse is casting a very wide net with this wave of spudly figures. We got our hands on Silent Bob, Bert and Ernie of Sesame Street, Michelangelo and Raphael from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Spock from Star Trek, and the world’s most famous vocaloid, Hatsune Miku. This highly eclectic spread just proves that when it comes to Poptaters, there’s something here for just about everyone! The character-specific parts are very well detailed and painted, to the point where the reference is immediately clear once it’s fully assembled. The Turtles figures are the only exception. While the plug-in parts are unmistakably TMNT, the potato body visually muddies the waters more so than with other characters. Perhaps if the potato was green?

Despite that one critique, we have to commend the accessories for adding even more recognition and playability to the Poptaters. Silent Bob includes a fast food bag and a boombox, Miku appropriately, has a microphone, Bert has a Pigeon, while Ernie has his Rubber Duck, the turtles have their iconic weapons, and Spock has a phaser, set to stunning. Lastly, the cylindrical containers they come in offer a great view of the figure, even unopened, which is good news for you collectors out there.

Should I get it?

Poptaters are just as entertaining and cool nearly a year later as they were upon launch. This new batch meets the same bar of high quality, so if you see a character you love, definitely pick one up!

Pros

  • The breadth of characters and properties is super broad.
  • The pieces are well sculpted and painted.
  • They come with accessories.
  • They look just as good in-box and they do out of box.

Cons

  • The only con is that the Turtles Pop Taters don’t quite capture the same level of iconic likeness that others do.
