Kids learn through play, and the four Montessori-based kits from Headu aim to make learning fun for toddlers and preschoolers.

The Tactile Flashcards is a set of 20 flashcards and four tactile cards. Each tactile card has a different texture on it, and kids are encouraged to touch the tactile cards and talk about how each one feels. Then draw a flashcard and guess which tactile category it belongs to: smooth, rough, wooly, or prickly. For instance, a teddy bear would be wooly, while a mirror would be smooth. The color on the back of each flashcard corresponds to the tactile card color it belongs to. These are for ages 1 to 4.

Also for ages 1 to 4 is Tactile Animals. This set comes with six two-piece animal puzzles for kids to put together. Then, they match the six tactile cards to the appropriate animal puzzle. Each tactile card lets kids feel and experience the animals’ textures. All of the pieces can be stored inside the cotton bag.

My Little House helps kids ages 2 to 5 identify shapes and classify objects. It comes with eight room cards that kids can lay out however they would like. Then kids have to match the 32 shaped pieces to put all of the items back where they belong. For instance, laundry in the laundry room and toilet paper in the bathroom. Some of the pieces even glow in the dark, however, this special fluorescent covering was ripped and peeling off of most of our pieces.

And for kids ages 3 to 6, the Writing Lab helps them practice reading and writing in three ways. First, kids compose the words with the tiles. Then, they compose the words with the moveable letters. And finally, they can write the words with the marker pen. Kids can write three-, four-, and five-letter words. There are even pieces that let kids draw a picture of the word. The marker easily wipes off the boards, but an eraser is not included.

Should I get it?

These toys offer many ways for kids to learn through play. We like the tactile play of the Flashcards and Animals set, providing kids sensory stimulation as they practice sorting, matching, and fine motor skills. The My Little House set is another fun way to help kids with fine motor skills and sorting, while also promoting some imaginative play. We just wish the glow in the dark covering hadn’t peeled off. And the Writing Lab combines puzzles with writing and drawing, encouraging creativity while boosting a child’s language skills.

Pros
