What’s old is new again thanks to American Girl’s latest historical dolls from 1999. Meet American Girl Isabel Hoffman, who lives in Seattle with her twin sister Nicki. Unlike her sister, Isabel loves dancing, pop music, glitter, and all things pink. The 18-inch doll looks pretty preppy in a cropped cable-knit sweater with attached collared shirt, a plaid skirt, knee socks, and platform shoes. The doll has medium-length blonde hair and green eyes that open and close. The doll includes the paperback book Isabel: My Journal, which features handwritten text, drawings, and magazine cut-outs, just like a real journal.

Add to Isabel’s ’90s fashions with Isabel’s Accessories. It includes a felt beret with faux mini American Girl Grin Pins attached. Isabel can also wear pink sunglasses with tinted pink lenses, a multicolored beaded flower necklace, and a transparent purple backpack. There’s also a doll-sized version of Isabel’s journal with two sticker sheets.

Isabel loves playing tennis, and the Isabel’s Tennis Outfit set includes a dress with attached argyle sweater vest, cotton collar, and pleated white tennis skirt. The doll can wear the white ankle socks with striped detailing with the white tennis shoes. The set also includes a tennis racket and tennis ball. Plus, there’s a little booklet with a quiz to determine what kind of tennis player you are.

When Isabel is not playing tennis, she can relax at home in her room. Isabel’s Bed & Floral Dreams Bedding Set features a white-painted wooden bedframe with a pink tufted mattress. The reversible comforter can match the pink gingham pillow or show a multicolored daisy-and-butterfly print. There’s also a doll-sized version of the Miss AG Bear, the American Girl plush teddy bear from the 1990s. The bear wears a blue nightgown with embroidered buttons.

Add to the bed set with Isabel’s Bedroom Accessories. The daisy-shaped pillow provides a nice accent when Isabel’s bed is made, and Isabel can sit and read in bed leaning against the plush pink backrest pillow. Or she can sit in bed and play with her pretend Tamagotchi, write in her journal with her fluffy pink pen, or read the latest issue of American Girl magazine. Decorate the bedroom with pretend butterfly string lights and the inspirational cat poster. There’s also a booklet with tips on how to create a style collage.

Should I get it?

We love all of the accessories that you can add to the Isabel doll [and I’m not just saying that because I used to own most of the same accessories when I was a child in the 90s] because, as always, there is such a great amount of detail, and American Girl did a great job picking accessories that really captured what the ’90s were all about. This is a wonderful way to show today’s kids how their parents lived as kids. We can definitely see older doll collectors wanting to add Isabel and all of her accessories to their collections, but this doll will inspire a lot of imaginative play for younger fans, too.
