Weekend Box Office: A Homerun for 42, Swing & Miss for Scary Movie

42, the inspirational baseball drama about Jackie Robinson, easily took the top spot over the weekend with $27.25 million. The movie has been getting great reviews and word of mouth recommendations should help the movie continue to perform well. Today is also is Jackie Robinson Day and all baseball players will be wearing his #42 jersey during their games, which should also help to promote the movie.

The weekend was far less kind to the latest Scary Movie instalment, Scary Movie 5, which tanked with only $15.1 million. The #3 and #4 spots on the list went to two Time To Play reviewed moviesThe Croods and G.I. Joe: Retaliation. Both movies continue to do well with The Croods now grossing $142.5 million and becoming the second highest grossing movie of 2013 behind Oz The Great and Powerful‘s $219.4 million. G.I. Joe: Retaliation crossed over the $100 million mark over the weekend and has now earned a total gross of $102.4 million. Paramount, the movie’s distributor, has already announced that a third movie would be made.

The Evil Dead remake rounded out the top 5 with a steep 63% drop from it’s opening weekend and just $9.5 million added to it’s total.
