Three new movies opened over the weekend, but it was last weekend’s new releases, Mr. Peabody & Sherman and 300: Rise of an Empire that held onto the top spots. Those two movies traded places from their openings with Peabody moving from #2 to #1 with $21.2 million in its second weekend out and 300 dropping to #2 (from #1) with $19.1 million.
Of the three new releases, Need For Speed was the only one to crack the Top 5. It cruised into a disappointing 3rd place with $17.8 million. The other two new releases included the latest Tyler Perry movie, The Single Moms’ Club, which represents Perry’s worst opening yet with $8.3 million, and Veronica Mars, which arrived in 10th with $2.0 million. While that opening might sound terrible, the Kickstarter-funded, Mars was only playing in 291 theaters and is already available for home VOD viewing.
