Divergent, the futuristic thriller based on the YA novel, easily claimed the top spot on the box office list with $56 million. That’s the second best opening of 2014 so far. The best opening is currently The LEGO Movie, which is still in the Top 10, and has earned a total of $243.4 million in the states alone.
The latest Muppets movie, Muppets Most Wanted was the surprising disappointment over the weekend with just $16.5 million. Could it be that the recent glut of family-friendly movies has finally reached a point where parents are not as eager to take the kids to theaters? Perhaps. The movie has been getting good reviews so it will be interesting to see how it performs over the next few weeks. Speaking of family-friendly, Mr. Peabody & Sherman dropped from 1st to 3rd with another 11.7 million.
