Two new movies–Rock of Ages and That’s My Boy–premiered over the weekend and neither were able to bump Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted out of the top spot. In fact, the two new releases were not even able to take second place, which went to Prometheus for a second week in a row. Speaking of Prometheus, if you are looking for a good summer movie without the kids, get a baby-sitter for the evening and go see this Alien prequel.
Back to the two new releases, which both bombed at the box office. Rock of Ages debuted in 3rd place with an estimated $15.06 million. The movie looks terrible and I had a bad feeling about it when the commercials tried to hide the fact that it’s a musical. That’s My Boy, Adam Sandler’s latest dud, landed in 5th place with an estimated $13 million. It looks like it could be ok but like most of his movie’s from this millennium – it doesn’t look funny or worth the cost of the theater ticket.
As for The Avengers‘ quest to cross the $600 million milestone. The movie added another $8.8 million to it’s tally bringing it’s total domestic gross to $586,737,000. We are just about two weeks away from The Amazing Spider-Man, which might bump The Avengers from theaters entirely so hopefully the movie can reach that goal in the next two weekends.
