What It Is
Stella Batts: A Case of the Meanies is the fourth book in the Stella Batts chapter book series, which follows the adventures of 8-year-old aspiring writer Stella and the candy store her family owns. In this book, written by Courtney Sheinmel and illustrated by Jennifer A. Bell, the "meanies" are going around at Stella's school. Mrs. Finkel doesn't like Stella's story, Stella is the only kid who didn't get invited to Joshua's birthday party, and Stella's little sister gets into a fight with the new boy in her class. Despite Stella's anger that everyone is being so mean, she has to check herself to make sure she doesn't catch a case of the meanies, too.
Is It Fun?
This is a nice chapter book for newly independent readers with black-and-white illustrations throughout the book to help kids visualize the story. We like that this book paints a realistic picture of things that most kids deal with at one time or another: feeling left out and how to deal with people who are mean to you. It's an entertaining book with a good message.
Who It’s For
Sleeping Bear Press recommends Stella Batts: A Case of the Meanies for ages 9-13, but we think it's also appropriate for kids as young as 7.
