What It Is

From the illustrator of A Sick Day for Amos McGee and Bear Has a Story to Tell, comes this new picture book starring a young boy who yearns to see a whale in the sea. But while he awaits, he must resist being distracted by other things that come along, such as ships, pelicans and even pirates, or he may miss the elusive creature.

Is It Fun?

The main attraction of this book is Erin Stead's illustrations. She creates each picture using painted imprints that she hand carves into wood blocks and the result is a masterpiece. One can easily imagine these illustrations being an inspiration for a child's room decor. The author appears to clearly communicate a message about being patient. At the same time, a deeper meaning could be that if you wait too long for the "big" things, you may miss the smaller pleasures in life.

Who It’s For

The is the perfect bedtime picture book, or one for teachers to read to calm a class of youngsters from preschool age on up.
