What It Is

Kids can get to know Amelia Bedelia, the character that takes everything literally, when she was a little girl with a new chapter book series written by the nephew of Amelia’s creator. Amelia Bedelia Means Business is the first book in the series and finds Amelia pining for a new bicycle. Her parents tell her that the bike she’s been eyeing would cost an arm and a leg. In true Amelia style, she wonders how she would ride it if she were missing an arm and a leg. So she decides to earn money to buy the bike, and as you can image, engages in a bunch of mixed-up moneymaking ventures before she is able to buy the bike of her dreams.

Is It Fun?

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Peggy Parish’s first Amelia Bedelia book and a great opportunity to introduce this literary rite-of-passage to kids. Author Herman Parish continues the whimsy and innocent bumbling that his aunt cleverly created. The illustrations are funny and will help beginning chapter book readers envision the story.

Who It’s For

My second grader loved this book, and I think she could even have read it at age 6. The publisher offers a wide variety of formats of “young Amelia” stories that span a wide age group.

What To Be Aware Of
