What It Is
Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made is a new book, and likely a future series, about an 11-year-old “detective.” But, as his name implies, Timmy is, basically, a total buffoon. He bumbles all of his cases and has an obsession with a competitive female detective in his school that’s borderline stalking. He has a terrible attitude towards school, his peers and is just plain dumb when it comes to his detective agency. Timmy’s single mom works so hard to provide for them that she’s not around to help with any of his social or academic issues. When his mom is around, it’s with her loser boyfriend. Timmy’s pet polar bear, who appears to be part imaginary and part real, is also prominently featured in the story.
Is It Fun?
The publisher describes Timmy as “clueless and comically self-confident,” but my heart ached for this poor boy. To me, he’s a child crying out for help. Luckily, this psychological profile will likely go above kids’ heads, and they should laugh at Timmy’s misguided antics. The book is written and illustrated in a style similar to Diary of a Wimpy Kid, which kids should also find appealing.
Who It’s For
The publisher recommends this book for ages eight and up, but I would push it one year because of its longer length and themes. While there is certainly more quality literature for younger readers, it might get a reluctant reader to read because of its humor.
What To Be Aware Of
Timmy Failure is available in hardcover and e-book for $14.99 each, but my vote is to head to the library or wait for paperback.
