What It Is
New Old School Games is bringing back the age-old game Ro Sham Bo (aka Rock Paper Scissors) in a new board game format. The basic rules of the game are that rock beats scissors, scissors beats paper, and paper beats rock.
To begin, all players roll the die to see who goes first, and then roll again for bridge troll assignment. There are four bridges and one player is named the troll for each, so if you're playing with more than four players, only the top four rolls will get to select a bridge to troll. With all playing pieces on the Start square, players take turns rolling the die and moving that number along the game board.
If you land on a + space, you get to roll again.
If you land on the same space where another player is, those two players challenge each other to a single Ro Sham Bo challenge. The loser goes back five spaces.
If you land on a challenge space, you select the top challenge card and follow the instructions. Challenge cards might ask you to challenge other players to a single Ro Sham Bo challenge, move back a certain number of spaces and get everyone something to drink, or do the chicken dance.
If you land on a bridge space, you have the chance to move into the next level on the board. To do this, you must beat the bridge troll in a best of three Ro Sham Bo challenge.
Once a player reaches the winner's square, he or she still has one last challenge before winning: defeat all the other players in a single Ro Sham Bo challenge.
Ro Sham Bo comes with a game board, eight game pieces, a die, and 50 challenge cards, including four blank ones so you can write your own challenges. The game is for four to eight players.
Is It Fun?
If you know how to play Rock Paper Scissors, then Ro Sham Bo should be familiar to you and fairly easy to pick up. The challenge cards bring about some humor and, in some cases, physical activity to take the game beyond just turning your hands into a rock, scissors, or paper.
Who It’s For
Ro Sham Bo is for ages 5 and up.
What To Be Aware Of
Additional Ro Sham Bo challenge card sets are also available in different themes: vacation, party, guys, family, personal, beverage consumption, and college. Each is sold separately and retails for $9.99.
