What It Is
“What will I be when I grow up?” is one of the most common questions kids fantasize about starting at a very young age. In this fabulous picture book, a young boy explores that same question. Inspired by the great outdoors, the boy imagines he could be a raindrop and is led on a journey from one element of nature to another. Ultimately, he knows exactly what he should be when he grows up and that’s to be just like his dad.
Is It Fun?
Author-illustrator Leonid Gore makes terrific use of a peek-a-boo feature on each page that reveal a little something on the subsequent page and then recall the scene from the previous one. And, Gore painted his pictures with brilliant colors, as if a child had done it himself. “When I Grow Up” would also make a very cute gift from a little one to his or her daddy.
Who It’s For
The publisher, Scholastic, lists a recommended age of kindergarten through 3rd grade, but I feel this book is for a younger audience. In fact, my first thought was that it is a great book for toddlers who are transitioning from board books. The author’s use of repetition should certainly captivate this young audience.
What To Be Aware Of
Parents will want to take care to keep the cover jacket on the book. It has a “peek-a-boo” to the actual hardcover and the book does not look “complete” without it.
