What It Is

What It Is

Math Slam is a portable game station designed to help children practice math. It features five games that reinforce important math concepts, such as sequencing, addition and subtraction, and missing numbers. Each game has four difficulty levels and is timed.

Choose a game by pressing one of the five game buttons on top of the Math Slam unit. Math problems and elapsed time appear on the LCD window. There are four colorful answer paddles that kids must press to choose the correct answer. Throughout play there are flashing lights and sound effects.

The first game is Slam it Up, which asks kids to put numbers in order. Sum Slam is a game where kids answer random addition problems. Kids answer random subtraction problems in Subtraction Slam. In Mystery Number, random addition equations appear on the LCD screen with one number missing and the answer showing. Kids must choose the missing number to complete the equation. The last game, Triple Slam, combines addition and subtraction. Kids may have to add three numbers or add two numbers and then subtract a third number.

Why It’s Fun

Math Slam is a fun and fast-paced way for kids to practice their math skills. Not only do you need to know the correct answer, but you also have to find the answer lit up in one of the answer paddles. And because the games are timed, you'll want to quickly find and slam the correct answer paddle. Kids can see how long it takes them to answer all the problems, and then they can go back and try to beat that score, which in turn further helps to reinforce the math skills. The cool design of Math Slam and the lights and sound effects will engage kids as they play.

Who It’s For

Math Slam is for ages 5 and up.

What to Be Aware of

The different ways in which the problems are structured are engaging for kids, and they also encourage different types of conceptual thinking around numbers, which is a great way to reinforce skills in a fun context. Kids will find their growing mastery of the problems very rewarding.

For younger kids, some co-play with grown-ups can reinforce the skills while keeping the process fun.

Math Slam requires three C batteries, which are not included. The game shuts down after 30 seconds of inactivity to preserve battery life.

There is a volume control button and a headphone jack.

Clean Math Slam with a damp or dry cloth.
