Stratego Review (PlayMonster)

What It Is

This is new version of the classic game Stratego from Patch Products. While the original Chinese game first came to the U.S. in 1960 where it had a theme of knights and castles, the new version has an updated theme of battling armies on distant planets. Two players set up opposing armies-30 pieces each-and move to strike their opponents. If a player strikes an opponent with a lower value, he wins. If she strikes with a higher value, he loses. Losing pieces are taken off the board. The winner is the first player who penetrates behind enemy lines and captures the opponent's flag.

There are pieces that move differently as well, but the real strategy comes from how you set up your army, protect your flag using high powered pieces and bombs, and make inroads on your enemy's territory. There are also scouts and other pieces you can use to try to figure out your opponent's battle plan.

Is It Fun?

While the storyline behind the game might have been updated, this is still a basic strategy game-and one of the best ones yet. But like all the top strategy games, it's dependent on the creativity and ingenuity of the players to make it a great game experience.
