Happy Birthday! Review (North Star Games)

What It Is

Happy Birthday! is a party game designed specifically for kids. In the game, players take turns giving each other gifts, but not all the gifts are great. For instance, Jedi training could be cool, but maybe not 10 parrots. Players receive five gift cards dealt to them face-down. One player gets to be the first birthday judge, and the other players choose one of their gift cards to place face-down in front of the judge. The judge then mixes up the cards, flips them over one at a time, and selects the gift she likes most and the gift she dislikes most. The player who gave the worst gift and the player who gave the best gift each take back their winning cards. Play continues with players taking turns as judge each time until one player wins five cards. The game is for three to eight players and comes with 150 gift cards.

Is It Fun?

This is a silly game that is easy to learn and play. Some of the gift choices are just totally out there and are sure to make kids laugh at how terrible they are or excited about how cool they would be to get. (Visit Hogwarts, anyone?) It's also fun to see how a gift that one person dislikes is a gift that somebody else might like.

Who It’s For

Happy Birthday! is for ages 6 and up.
