Sphero 2.0 Review (Orbotix, Inc.)

What It Is

Sphero 2.0 from Orbotix is faster, brighter, and offers more apps than the original Bluetooth-powered ball. On its own, it's a highly sophisticated robotic ball that connects to an Android or iOS device by Bluetooth. The tough poly-carbonic shell stands up to a lot of use. It features multiple color LED lights and is water-proof. Set up is easy, charge it up in the wireless charger. Once charged, connect via Bluetooth and tap it twice to activate it.

Is It Fun?

As with any toy of this nature, there is a bit of a learning curve. Orbotix says the toy can be programmed. We found this simply means you can send it a variety of commands that the Sphero will remember in sequence. Tech-savvy users hoping to write code for the toy may be disappointed, but it's still entertaining for the average user.

The long-term fun of this toy will come from downloading and using the different apps, and there are enough of them that players at different ages can find something that best suits their skill level. We found most of the apps are fun to use, although we question even with the apps whether this toy has enough long-term play value to justify the $129 price point.

Who It’s For

Sphero 2.0 is for ages 8 and up.

What To Be Aware Of

Sphero 2.0 will play at top speed for up to 60 minutes before it needs to be recharged. It takes three hours to fully charge Sphero.

There are currently more than 25 Sphero apps to play with. Most apps are free but a few cost 99 cents.
