Last year, Tamagotchi made a comeback in app form for a new generation. And this year Namco Bandai and Sync Beatz Entertainment have released a follow-up free app called Tamagotchi L.i.f.e. Angel. Like the Tamagotchi L.i.f.e. app, this app also recreates the gaming experience of the 1990s' Tamagotchi Angel digital pet toy, in which Tamagotchi features an Angel theme. Tamagotchi owners can alternate between Toy Mode, which looks just like the 1990s toy, and App Mode, which looks like a traditional full-screen, to play with Tamagotchi. In Toy Mode, users rely on the toy screen's three buttons-A,B, and C-to rotate through the different settings and features of the toy. In App Mode, these features are indicated by icons located and the top and bottom of the screen. For example, in App Mode, you can flip through photos and take pictures of your growing Tamagotchi by tapping the corresponding icons.
The app also introduces multiple Tamagotchi characters, which, depending on how you care for your Tamagotchi, can either evolve into a pure angel with good care or a devil angel with bad care. As with the original Tamagotchi, the level of care is indicated by Life, Deeds, Hunger, and Effort meters, which you can alternate between. For example, if your Tamagotchi is hungry you can feed it a balanced diet of candy and pie. Sometimes you may need to tap the screen to scare away bats trying to eat your Tamagotchi's food, which is a new feature that further engages owners within the app. Play a counting game in App Mode or a "Shooting Stars Game" in Toy Mode to help elevate your pet's happiness level. Once your Tamagotchi has reached the end of its life cycle, you can reset it to raise a new Tamagotchi all over again.
Earn points for caring for your Tamagotchi. The more Tamagotchi's you raise and care for, the more additional features within the app you'll unlock. For example, each day you check in and care for your pet, you'll unlock features such as wallpaper that can also be used as background on your device.
Additional features include 22 in-app wallpapers you can choose to decorate your Tamagotchi's habitat, 12 shells for the classic mode; and more, which you can switch between by tapping the Gallery icon at the top of your screen.
While the app shares a lot of the same features as the original toy, it also expands the experience with today's digital kids in mind. It still focuses on the nurture play of the digital pets, but also rewards good Tamagotchi parents with bonus features they can unlock, giving kids more incentive to continue engaging with the app. And for original Tamagotchi fans, this brings a little piece of the old toy back.
Tamagotchi L.i.f.e. Angel will appeal to today's kids that will enjoy taking digital pet play on the go as well as adults who are still a bit nostalgic for the toy of their youth. We think girls will especially like the social components built into the app and the ability to share their photos and experiences of their Tamagotchi with friends. However, the devil themes of this app could also invite more boys to play as well.
Caring for a Tamagotchi is easy but they require a lot of attention. While ignoring a Tamagotchi for too long in the previous app often resulted in death, in this app you'll quickly find an unhappy Tamagotchi can transform into a mean Devil-themed Tamagotchi. You can cure a sick Tamagotchi though with a shot of medicine.
If at anytime you need a refresher on how to use the app and its features, simply click on the "help" icon on the app's homescreen and click tutorial for a walk through. You can also turn on music, sound effects, notifications, and connect to Facebook under options.
The app is currently available for free download on iOS and Android devices in the U.S. and Canada.
