My Dream Playground Review (Candlewick Press)

What It Is

Ashley is a little girl with a big dream. Her dream is not to be a princess or a millionaire. Ashley's dream is to have a playground across the street from her house. Every day, she looks at the vacant lot across the street and imagines a fantastic playground in its place. The playground is so important to her that she draws picture after picture of what it could look like. One day, she sees a man taking measurements of the lot. It turns out that he is planning to build a playground! The two become friends and he makes Ashley a project manager. The community comes together to help build the playground and Ashley is even interviewed for the local news.

Is It Fun?

While many are fortunate to have playgrounds in home towns and on schoolyards, many communities do not. Ashley's story is an effective way to teach children two lessons. First is that dreams can come true, so keep dreaming! Second is that communities can be a very strong place and anything is possible when working together. This book was inspired by Kaboom, a non-profit organization dedicated to making sure that there is a playground within walking distance of every child in America.
