Angry Birds Go! Review (Rovio)

What It Is

Angry Birds: Go! from Rovio is a mobile app game that reimagines the familiar game-play mechanics of previous Angry Birds games. Go is a kart-style racing game with the birds and pigs as the racers.

There are different tracks with multiple race challenges for each track. Races range from standard races to Fruit Splat challenges where you have to splat the fruit on the track by driving through it. The control system relies on the player steering the kart by tilting the mobile device like a steering wheel. There is no speed or break control.

As you play through the game, you will unlock new bird character drivers. The drivers use the same karts but each one has a unique ability, like flying over other racers in a bubble or getting a speed boost. There are more than 50 karts available in the game, which can be purchased and upgraded using in game coins. Some karts are only available for purchase with real money as in-app purchases.

Go supports the Telepod toys, which are collectible figures that you can teleport into your game by placing them over your devices' camera and scanning them. Once scanned, they unlock new karts and races in the game.

Is It Fun?

The game is a surprisingly well-done Kart Racer with crisp graphics, lots of content and a simple and intuitive control system. Players will enjoy the mechanics and, of course, playing with these now-familiar characters.

Who It’s For

Angry Birds fans, ages 4 and up.

What To Be Aware Of

Go is the first Angry Birds game that is Free-To-Play. Since it is free, there is a greater emphasis on the in-app purchases than previous games. The good news is that you can play and enjoy this game without spending any money. As with any in-app purchase games, make sure your device is password protected to prevent your kids or anyone else playing on your device, from running up a huge bill. The in-app purchases in Go range from a few dollars to $100.

You will need to be connected to the internet to download the game or make in-app purchases, but do not have to be connected to play the game. Angry Birds Go is available for iOS, Android, Windows Phone 8 and Blackberry 10.
