Goldie Blox and the Parade Float is from GoldieBlox, a company created by female engineer Debbie Sterling from Stanford with the goal of getting more girls interested in engineering and doing so in a fun and engaging way. Goldie Blox and the Parade Float comes with one story book, six blocks, four long axles, nine short axles, one ribbon, seven wheels, four spacers, and different character figures to bring the story's builds to life beyond the pages. The Goldie Blox book series follow the adventures of the young female engineer Goldie Blox and guides readers to build the different engineering models that Goldie Blox and her friends are creating.
In this story, Goldie's friend Ruby is competing in the Miss Princess Pageant but their friend Katinka also decides to sneak into the running. When Katinka loses to Ruby, her friends ban together to make Katinka her own parade float to make her feel like a princess. As girls move through the book, a symbol across various pages will indicate what tools girls will need to use and how to replicate the different builds featured on the pages. The builds start out simple leading up to the big build, the parade float, at the end.
With women overall underrepresented in the science and engineering fields and young girls often steered toward careers in other fields, we think the concept for GoldieBlox is not only unique but really inspiring. Storytelling is a time-proven play pattern that works to reach girls so combining it in a way that invites girls to test their problem solving skills and introduce them engineering principles has the potential to engage more girls in the field.
Goldie Blox and the Parade Float is for ages 4–9.
While the book introduces girls to basic engineering principles and models, no additional information is really provided to explain these principles and how these builds can be applied in the real world. We think this could have further helped girls to understand these concepts beyond the toys they are creating.
The final pages of the book features additional parade float designs, however no written instructions are provided to create these models. Additional design ideas created by fellow Goldie Blox builders are also featured on the Goldie Blox website.
The building pieces do not snap together very well and can sometimes fall apart when put into motion.
