Peekaboo Sesame Street Review (Night & Day Studios)

What It Is

Kids can play peek-a-boo with favorite Sesame Street characters with the app Peekaboo Sesame Street. A stroll through the neighborhood lands you at the iconic brownstone stoop where favorite characters are knocking behind the bouncing door. When kids tap the door, they'll see Elmo, Cookie Monster, Abby Cadabby, Super Grover, Bert, Ernie, and Big Bird. Oscar the Grouch even knocks from his trashcan. Each time kids tap on the door, they'll see a different character and the name of the character or the name of an object the character is holding. Kids will also hear the character's name or object's name said aloud. There are two play modes. Looped mode allows for endless play while Regular mode ends with Elmo and Abby Cadabby getting ready to sleep, which is perfect for bedtime. The app also includes parent tips that provide additional learning opportunities for the app as well as suggestions for continued exploration outside the smart device.

Is It Fun?

This app is designed to introduce young children to cause and effect, and, through seeing and hearing the words, children can practice word and letter recognition and speech while playing the app. The app only includes eight Sesame Street characters and eight objects, and after playing through the app a few times, older kids might become bored and want more variety. This is definitely an app for young Sesame Street fans who will like guessing and seeing what character will pop out to say hello next.

Who It’s For

Peekaboo Sesame Street is for ages 2 and up.

What To Be Aware Of

This app is compatible with the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. It requires iOS 5.0 or later and is optimized for the iPhone 5.

From the app's home screen, parents can purchase more apps and access the app's settings. Both can only be accessed by swiping on the screen in the direction the app tells you, which is a pretty decent safeguard against toddlers accessing these areas.

If you're playing in Regular mode, the app will eventually bring you back to the home screen after Abby and Elmo go to bed. But if you're playing in Looped mode, there is no end to the app. The only way to return to the app's home screen is by powering off your device and restarting it.
