Kids can create all kinds of silly stories starring Elmo with the Elmo's Story Maker app. Based on the Sesame Street segment "Elmo the Musical", this interactive app introduces kids to the basics of storytelling, including story structure: beginning, middle, and end. Kids start out at the beginning by choosing a costume for Elmo. For instance, clown Elmo, cowboy Elmo, or president Elmo. Then kids choose one of Elmo's friends to also be in the story. The narrator will then read aloud the beginning of a story based on what kids have chosen. For the middle of the story, kids choose from a variety of characters and objects to add to the story. The narrator will then read the middle of the story based on what kids have chosen. And then kids choose even more characters and objects to add to the end of the story. Again, the narrator will read the end of the story based on what kids have chosen. Then, kids can play their story back from the beginning with narration. Kids can also record themselves or a family member reading the story. And kids can share their finished stories with friends and family members.
On the app's homepage, click on the Grown-Ups Section button to add pictures to the app so that kids can see their faces or their friends' faces as new characters in the stories. The Grown-Ups Section also allows parents to set up an email account for sharing finished stories and receiving stories from friends who are also using the Elmo's Story Maker app. If you don't set up an account, you will not be able to share or receive stories. The homepage also lets you access the Story Library where you can see all the stories your child has created or received from family and friends.
Elmo fans will have fun creating new stories for a favorite character with this app. We like that the app can be personalized through adding your own pictures and recording your own voice. This engages kids in imaginative play as they help determine how the story will go.
Elmo's Story Maker is for ages 3–5.
This app is available on the iPad and Amazon Kindle.
There is a shopping cart button accessible in the Grown-Ups Section that lets you shop for other Sesame Street apps. In order to access the store, however, a parent must answer a math-based security question.
