Touch & Teach Word Book Review (VTech)

What It Is

The Touch & Teach Word Book is an interactive book designed to teach basic word and letter skills to kids. There are 12 pages, and the words are divided into themes: home, food, clothes, toys, the park, and the zoo. Use the slide on the side to turn on the toy and set which activity to play. In Word mode, kids touch the pictures to hear the word. In Letters mode, kids explore letters by touching words, and the toy says the word and the first letter of that word or a word that starts with that word. In Music mode, kids can hear songs, and when they touch the pictures, they will hear sounds related to the item pictured. Slightly older kids can press the question mark button for Search and Discover to answer questions based on finding specific pictures.

Why Is It Useful?

The best part of this book is the open-ended exploration and touching with responses. The design makes it easy for small fingers to manipulate, and kids will learn words by whole word recognition. There are no phonics involved. Infants and early preschoolers will find lots to do, and even though the activities are somewhat random, it's child-directed play, and the toy is very responsive. Co-play with a parent will maximize the learning potential of this toy.

Who It’s For

The Touch & Teach Word Book is for ages 18 months and up.

What To Be Aware Of

This toy includes two AA batteries for the in-store try-me features, so it's recommended that you replace them before you play for best results. The toy does have auto shut-off to preserve battery life.

When the sounds are not directly related to a specific picture, there are abstract sounds, such as a whistle or a bell, so younger kids may not get the correlation between the words and the pictures.
