PlayStation 4 (PS4) Review (Sony)

What It Is

The PlayStation 4 (PS4) from Sony is the follow up to the PS3 console. The new console has a sleek angular look and state-of-art electronics that make it an impressive piece of gaming hardware. The PS4 also includes improved social integration, Online features and faster speeds that will enhance gameplay.

Is It Fun?

While the PS4 is packed with features, the main reason that people buy it is to play games and those games look brilliant on this new system. The graphics are stunning and allow for a huge leap forward in the level of detail in the scenery and backgrounds. Trees have individual leaves and the farthest distances are just as crisp as the middle and foregrounds.

The PS4 comes with several apps installed including apps for streaming music and movies from online services such as Netflix and Amazon. The browser is far better than the PS3's and presents an online browsing experience that is close to what you find on a mobile device. Another app allows you to broadcast your game play and watch other people's games in real-time. Of the installed items, the only thing that comes close to a game is The Playroom, which is a collection of activities. The activities use the PlayStation Camera and Dualshock 4 controller to turn your room and TV into an Augmented Reality (AR) environment. Two of which involve interacting with cute robots and the third is a two-player game of AR Hockey. You will need two controllers to play hockey.

The standard console comes with one Dualshock 4 controller that has also been redesigned to be more ergonomical and easier to use. The controller has also added a headphone jack, speaker, track pad and a lightbar, which seems to be taking the place of the PS3's Move controller. There's also a new button for instantly sharing what you are doing on the PS4 with your social networks (Facebook - Twitter).

Who It’s For

The PS4 is for PlayStation fans of all ages. The simple design and easy to navigate user interface should allow kids as young as 4 to easily turn the system on and play a game.

What To Be Aware Of

The initial set-up is easy and will quickly walk you through a few simple steps, including configuring your internet connection and hooking up the camera. You can skip both of these and get right to gaming but setting up the camera also allows you to enter your Face Data, which will allow you log into the PS4 simply by showing your face to the camera.

If you have a PSN membership, you will be able to link your Facebook account to the PS4 to share game statuses and achievements.

The PS4 uses an HDMI cable to connect to a TV so you will need a TV with an HDMI input.

Don't get rid of your PS3 yet because you can NOT play PS3 or older games on the PS4. A lot of people are annoyed by that but if you think about it, we want new consoles that are truly new and not just the previous console with minor improvements.
