Good-Bye, Fish Review (Clavis Books)

What It Is

Animal Square is a new picture book series in which a community of animal friends live and play together. In this book, Dog visits Kitty and finds her very sad. Kitty's pet fish is floating on its back. They can't figure out what is wrong with Fish so they try to tickle him and make waves in the bowl to get him swimming, but nothing works. Giraffe comes along and breaks the sad news that Fish has died. Together, they bury Fish in the garden so he has a nice resting place and Kitty can visit him often. Each day that Kitty visits Fish's grave, she sprinkles a little water on it. To her surprise, a beautiful flower grows in the garden to remind Kitty of her special friend.

Is It Fun?

This is a very sweet story and a gentle way to discuss the notion of losing a loved one with young children, whether it be a pet, friend or family member.

Who It’s For

The publisher, Clavis, recommends these titles for children aged 3 to 5, but kids even younger will enjoy them.

What To Be Aware Of

They are available only in hardcover and may be hard to find in the library as Clavis is relatively new in the US.
